Exploring the Lake District

The Lake District is a stunning countryside area in the Northwest of England and it attracts thousands of visitors each year. With rolling green hills, beautiful lakes and even a coastline, the Lake District is the perfect holiday destination for anyone who loves the great outdoors. We took a look at what else this incredible location has to offer…

Brockwood Hall

Where is the Lake District?

The Lake District sits in the county of Cumbria, with Lancaster to the South and Carlisle just North. It’s actually a lot easier to get to than you might think, with trains and buses running multiple routes to the local area. Holidaymakers can easily drive to the Lake District too and there are plenty of car parks around to accommodate. This makes the Lake District the perfect escape to the countryside!

The Lakes Themselves

The Lake District is actually made up of several bodies of water and each has its own features and charm. Coniston Water is a popular lake where you can boat, swim or just enjoy the wonderful nearby village. Derwentwater is one of the most beautiful lakes and you can take it all in on an 8 mile walk around the area. England’s deepest lake, Wastwater, is also picturesque with its mountain backdrop.

Lake District Walks

If you’re an avid hiker, or just enjoy a stroll in the great outdoors then the Lake District is a must! There is a wide range of trails and guided tours, meaning anyone can pick a walk on a level they feel comfortable with. There are even flatter trails for anyone using a wheelchair or buggy. If you love a challenge then there are also walking trails that take multiple days! Golakes has some good advice on walking trails in the Lake District.

Lake District Attractions

If walking, boating, cycling and swimming wasn’t enough there are even more activities on offer in the Lake District! Adrenaline fuelled adventures like GoApe and Treetop Nets are a fun way to get out into nature, especially with children and teenagers. There are also plenty of opportunities to learn more about the area with navigation courses and animal attractions. If you’re interested in the history and heritage of the Lake District there are lots of places to explore including Lowther Castle and the cottage of poet William Wordsworth. The official Lake District website has a great guide to all the main activities in the area here.

Weather in the Lake District

The weather in the Lake District can vary greatly so it’s important to check the forecast ahead of time. It does tend to follow traditional English weather, but because of the mountains there is often more rain. It’s a good idea to pack a variety of clothing, including a waterproof jacket, and take plenty of water with you on walks and other activities.

Places to Stay in the Lake District

The sheer size of the Lake District means that there are a huge number of places to stay. Camping is a popular choice and lets you truly immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area. There are over a dozen camping and caravan sites throughout the area so there is plenty to choose from when it comes to location. If you prefer something with a few more home comforts you can also book cottages, hotels and cabins. Brockwood Hall is a fantastic pick as it combines the cosy feel of a Norwegian lodge with amenities like a swimming pool, play area and restaurant.

You can find out more about holidays in the United Kingdom on the apartments4you information page. We also recommend taking a look at the official Lake District website as it has everything you need to know including contact numbers, event guides and a map of the Lake District.

Things to do in Puerto de Santiago Tenerife

Sitting between Playa de la Arena and Los Gigantes on Tenerife’s west coast, Puerto de Santiago is a peaceful fishing town with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. This makes it the perfect Tenerife location for families, first time holiday goers and those who just want to sit back and enjoy the sun. There are also plenty of things to do in Puerto de Santiago of course, from enjoying its sandy beaches to exploring the island’s history. Here are some of our top things to do and see in this tranquil location.

Weather in Tenerife

Being located in Tenerife means that the weather in Puerto de Santiago tends to be warm and spring like. This means it’s perfect for exploring the colourful streets, playing a round of golf or heading to the beach. On the odd chance that you experience rain on your trip to Puerto de Santiago you can always visit the fishing museum or eat at one of its many great restaurants.

Puerto de Santiago Restaurants

Being a fishing town means that Puerto de Santiago boasts many restaurants serving fresh seafood dishes.  The Fishermans Inn is a popular choice with its large terrace, sea views and brilliant fish dishes. For lunch or breakfast many people also recommend Deli on The Hill. Here they serve sandwiches, juices and other freshly prepared meals with many organically sourced ingredients.

Tenerife Golf

Take advantage of the beautiful weather with a game or two of golf. The Abama course is the nearest but can prove quite expensive so many people choose to make the short trip to Beaunavista. If you are an avid golf fan then there are plenty of other courses to check out in Tenerife within driving distance of Puerto de Santiago. Trip Advisor has a great guide to the best locations. Happy putting!

Puerto de Santiago Beaches

There is one main beach in Puerto de Santiago which had the soft black sands and clean water typical of the area. If you want to explore a larger beach area, you can make a 10 minute drive to the beach at Los Gigantes.

Puerto de Santiago Nightlife

The nightlife here is a lot quieter and calmer than many locations in Tenerife. This makes it perfect for families and couples who want to go out for food, drink and entertainment. Route 66 is a popular destination and boasts live bands and fun American style décor – the perfect spot for music lovers. There are also a few other small bars but no large clubs or distinct nightlife meaning the area stays fairly peaceful.

Puerto de Santiago Shopping

Whilst Puerto de Santiago is not known for its shopping, there are plenty of places to pick up souvenirs, food and other items. Vigilia Park not only offers accommodation but also a shopping centre where there is a pharmacy, souvenir shops, a perfumery and more, making it extremely convenient. There are also small shopping strips frequented by plenty of tourists.

There’s More to Las Vegas…

What comes to mind when you think of Las Vegas? Casinos, shows, clubs and other wild activities are often seen as the main attraction, but in actual fact there is a whole lot more to this popular US destination. From tours of the Grand Canyon to top golf clubs we took a look at what goes on in Vegas outside of the strip…

Boat Trips

Boat trips are a perfect way to explore the beautiful Nevada area. Lake Mead is a popular destination and is frequently toured by The Desert Princess, an old fashioned Mississippi-style paddle wheeler. If you want to see the incredible area surrounding the Hoover Dam by river raft, then Black Canyon Willow Beach River Adventures is a great option.

Driving Experiences

There are plenty of exciting driving experiences on offer in Las Vegas, from sports cars to buggies. If you prefer the thrill of driving exotic cars and muscle cars at top speeds then World Class Driving is worth checking out. Another great option, which is also suitable for families, is hiring out off-road buggies.

Wild West Horse Rides

One great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas is with a Wild West style horse ride. You can make your way through dusty dessert paths including the famous Ol’ Spanish trail before enjoying a classic American style meal. These horse treks are also a fun activity for groups or families with older children.

Las Vegas Golf Clubs

Las Vegas is a golfer’s paradise, with dozens of golf courses dotted throughout the state of Nevada. Some clubs are private so it’s worth checking ahead of time that you can gain entry but with so many to choose from its likely you will find the perfect course. Las Vegas Golf has a huge list of the top golf courses here.

Museums and Exhibits

Las Vegas is actually home to a wide variety of museums, exhibits and landmarks. The Neon Museum is a popular choice and features an outdoor lot called the Neon bone yard which is full of disused signs from the city’s past. The Nevada State Museum is a great experience for anyone interested in the rich history of the state whilst art lovers should check out The Barrick Museum, located at the University of Nevada.

Nevada Hot Springs

The Nevada area is home to hundreds of natural hot springs and they make the perfect place to relax and unwind in Las Vegas. Popular choices include the hot springs at Gold Strike Canyon which also involves a beautiful hike. Hot Creek Springs in the Kirch Wildlife Management Area also offers stunning mountain views.

Adrenaline Experiences

If you are an adrenaline junkie then Las Vegas is the place to be. Boat trips and hikes aren’t the only way to explore Nevada’s natural beauty! If you want to see the spectacular Bootleg Canyon from great heights then a zip line tour is an amazing way to do it! Skydiving is also a popular way to experience incredible locations from above including the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, Colorado River and Valley of Fire.

Many of these locations can be traveled to from hotels and resorts situated near the Strip, making them perfect for day trips. apartments4you has plenty of fantastic self catered accommodation in the Las Vegas area, including the popular Carriage House and Wyndham Grand Dessert.

What to Do In Spain in Winter

There is always plenty to do in Spain during the winter months. In fact you might be surprised to find that there will be more going on in some cities than during the summer! This is because many businesses including restaurants and bars are closed during the hottest months of the summer whilst employees head to cooler areas of Spain. This makes city breaks ideal for the winter months, with Barcelona, Seville and Madrid being top picks.

There are also plenty of activities to enjoy outside including golf which proves popular all year round in Spain. Cycling is also enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, especially in areas like Mallorca during the autumn months through to spring. Winter is also a good time to go hiking and explore Spain’s natural beauty and rich history without the risk of becoming overheated.

Christmas and New Year in Spain

Christmas is an exciting and traditional time of year in Spain. Many of the bigger cities will hold festive Christmas markets and events. Plaza Mayor in Madrid has one of the largest and most vibrant markets with over 100 stalls selling all kinds of Christmas items. Seville, Barcelona and Granada also hold wonderful Christmas markets which are worth a visit if you’re in the area. There are celebrations throughout December and the start of January in Spain, so this is a fantastic time to go if you really want to soak up the festive spirit! Spain.info has some great information on Christmas dates not to be missed if you do choose to spend the festive period in Spain.

Where to Go For Winter Sun in Spain

Many people choose to visit cities like Barcelona and Madrid during the winter months to experience the Spanish culture without the hustle and bustle of busy tourist periods or the highs temperatures of summer weather. However the south of Spain is generally the most popular destination for tourists in winter because it has the warmest weather. Areas like Málaga are ideal as there is plenty going on in the city itself but the weather is also warm enough to enjoy days at the beach or by the pool. Apartments4you offers plenty of high quality accommodation in the south of Spain including  the Heritage Resorts at Matchroom, Sunset Beach Club and Crown Resorts including Club Calahonda, Club Caronte and Club Delta Mar.

Visit the apartments4you site for plenty more self-catered accommodation in Spain.

If relaxing is more your idea of a great stay then make sure to visit the sauna, Jacuzzi and Turkish baths.
